Summer intern warns to avoid jellyfish when possible

Issac-blog

Isaac Barthelmess joins FOX CITIES Magazine as a staff intern for the summer.

My name is Isaac Barthelmess and I’m currently working as one of five editorial interns at FOX CITIES Magazine. In the fall, I will be a junior at Lake Forest College, majoring in Economics with a minor in Psychology.

I was born and raised in southern Illinois, right across the Mississippi from the beautiful city of St. Louis, Mo. Naturally, I’m a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan who harbors an immense amount of empathy for those unfortunate enough to call themselves Cubs or Brewers fans. I’ve been passionate about sports my entire life, raised in a household where baseball and football have always been of paramount importance.

Issac-headshotGrowing up, my family took many vacation trips to visit relatives during the holidays — Florida was always a particularly popular spot. On one such trip, we’d been at our destination no longer than 10 minutes before I was stung by a jellyfish while wading into the ocean. Great work, Isaac. Have you ever been stung by a jelly? Well, I can tell you it isn’t pleasant.

After spending the first 15 years of my life in the St. Louis area, my family moved to the Fox Cities where we’ve been living happily ever since. I have one older brother who is now out of college and living on his own somewhere in New York City. My parents are the two hardest working people I know and they raised both Luke and me (well, Luke for sure) the right way – he’s working his dream job, poor kid. My family also has a 1-year-old golden retriever named Bear — he’s our second golden.

I’m a college football player with widespread academic/personal interests who enjoys reading and writing. I enjoy lifting weights, sleeping and surfing Netflix way past my bedtime. This past semester I discovered an attraction to black coffee I never knew I had before. I also read a book about investing once, primarily because Luke told me to. And, “Game of Thrones” is the best show on television. If anyone tells you different, they’re either ignorant or just plain crazy.

“Friends” is one of my all-time favorite shows. I own every season and have made it my mission this summer to watch every episode (even though I pretty much already have) on Netflix. If I had to describe myself, I’d say I’m a healthy mix of both Joey and Chandler, minus the Italian heritage.

Another little hobby of mine is watching any and every sporting event I can find. I still have no idea what is going on during a rugby match, but man can those guys hit hard. I enjoy watching baseball, both professional and college, and don’t understand people who claim baseball is “boring.” If you want to really understand how un-boring baseball is, read “Pure Baseball” by Keith Hernandez and let it boggle your mind for a few pages.

Oh, and as a footnote, avoid jellyfish — they rarely have good intentions. They may look cute and harmless, but as soon as you’re in range, they’ll ruin the first day of your vacation without a second thought — sneaky little gelatinous marine animals, those jellyfish.
