‘Hello, my name is …’
My name is Maggie Ward, and I am currently working as one of the editorial interns at FOX CITIES Magazine. I am a senior at Lawrence University, with majors in English and theater and minors in Spanish and creative writing.
I was born in Wausau and lived there my whole life before moving to Appleton. I have two siblings, both younger, and a little dog named Buttons. Buttons is a bichon frise who likes to wear onesies, eat carrots and sleep on my freshly washed pillows.
Theater has been a passion of mine since I played King Herod in my first-grade Christmas pageant. Throughout middle and high school, I was heavily involved in Wausau community theater. I also have performed in several roles at Lawrence University, most recently singing the “Day by Day” solo in the Lawrence Theater Department musical “Godspell.” My next performance will be in May, when I will appear as a nun seducing a video store manager in the play, “First Night” by Jack Neary.
I also have been very interested in reading and writing since an early age. As a child, I devoured entire series of books from “Redwall” to “The Boxcar Children.” My love of reading manifested itself in my English major, as well as my position as copy editor at the “Lawrentian” for the past four years. The last two books I read were Joseph Heller’s “God Knows,” and “1Q84” by Haruki Murakami. Bill Bryson’s “In A Sunburned Country” has been patiently waiting for me on my nightstand for the past week, first in line of my ever growing “to read” list. My favorite books of all time are “The God of Small Things” by Arundhati Roy, “Someone” by Alice McDermott and “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd.
At Lawrence University, I am very involved in the conservatory with music for non-majors. I take voice lessons with Professor Bryan Post, and am currently in a keyboarding class to brush up on my piano playing. I have been a member of Appletones, Lawrence’s only co-educational a cappella group on campus, for four years as well. This year, I am one of the current managers for the group, which has given me great insight into the business aspect of the arts.
The most exciting moment of my college career was last year, when I studied abroad in Granada, Spain. I lived with a host family in the city for four months, and my program sponsored trips all over southern Spain. I also visited Morocco, London, Dublin, Belfast, and Edinburgh.
In the precious free time we carve out for ourselves at Lawrence University, I really enjoy running and watching Spanish telenovelas, sometimes at the same time. I love dark beers, strong coffee, making popcorn and eating entire sleeves of saltines in one sitting. I own every Taylor Swift album, and I’m not ashamed about it.
I am very excited to be working at FOX CITIES Magazine, and I look forward to writing for you!
