Worth the Drive: Sheboygan

Selfie Spot: The Sheboygan Project murals

The Sheboygan Project began in 2012 as part of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Connecting Communities program. The two-year project turned Sheboygan’s urban landscape into a city-wide canvas for 16 murals created in partnership with street art documentaries, Wooster Collective. The vibrant works of art are scattered throughout Sheboygan and depict the city’s unique culture and people. They make excellent photo ops – make sure to hashtag your pictures on social media with #thesheboyganproject. Find a walking tour map at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center or download one at jmkac.org.

Retail Therapy

Downtown Sheboygan, the Riverfront and South Pier offer shops of all kinds. Downtown you’ll find the sweetest home decor at retailers like Urban Antique, which specializes in repurposed and upcycled items as well as flea market finds, and Nest, an upscale store with sophisticated, yet unexpected items from table settings to rugs. Relish Kitchen Store is a foodie must-stop, with unique kitchen items including cookware, cutlery, utensils and the latest gadgets. Olivu 426 offers natural, handmade bath and beauty products, most of which use olive oil as a main ingredient (hence the store’s name).

Head to the Riverfront for culinary delights at Olivada and Schwarz Fish Company. Olivada offers more than 45 flavors of extra virgin olive oil as well as aged balsamic vinegars. Sampling is encouraged. Schwartz Fish Company has been family owned and operated since 1912, so it’s safe to say this specialty store and deli is a Sheboygan staple especially when it comes to their smoked fish products. Pick up some of Schwartz’s famous smoked fish spread, a standard offering at local get togethers.

Must-Have Souvenir: Wigwam Socks

Wigwam Mills, headquartered in Sheboygan since 1905, knits high-quality wool socks designed for optimal sports performance while still looking stylish. They hold a factory sale the second Thursday of each month from 7 a.m.– 6 p.m. where shoppers can pick up specially priced merchandise, irregulars, product with slight imperfections, and overstock socks, hats, and accessories. There is also a back-to-school sale in August and a pre-holiday sale in November at Wigwam’s Sheboygan store.
