5 Ways to Play in Plymouth
Take a historic hike
Plymouth is rich in history and there’s no better way to experience it than with the Historic Plymouth Walking Tour. This self-guided tour of landmarked buildings showcases the city’s most prominent businesses and residents who aided in Plymouth’s formation. Budget about two hours to complete the tour which loops throughout downtown Plymouth and its surrounding neighborhoods. Maps are available on the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce website, plymouthwisconsin.com.
Get an adrenaline rush at Road America
This motorsport road course located just north of Plymouth offers high-speed excitement to thousands of spectators each season. The park-like grounds span 640 acres, the pinnacle of which is the legendary 4-mile, 14-turn road circuit used for public race weekends, karting, supermoto and a variety of events. Visitors can relish the countryside setting by partaking in the family-friendly 4 Miles of Fitness events every Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., May through September. Here cyclists, walkers and runners can enjoy the facility in a safe environment.
Experience nature at Kettle Moraine State Forest
The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit comprises roughly 30,000 acres, stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. Formed by glaciers, the Kettle Moraine’s varied topography features everything from steep-sided ridges to flat outwash plains. There are several miles of hiking trails within the forest, including the Ice Age National Scenic Trail which travels for 31 miles through the length of the forest. The Greenbush trailhead is nearest to Plymouth and has two trail systems: four loops of challenging mountain bike trails totaling nine miles, interwoven with five loops of hiking trails totaling 13.5 miles. Other recreational opportunities include biking, camping, fishing, boating and swimming. An annual park sticker or trail pass is required to visit state parks and trails, and can be purchased online.
Go to the races at the Plymouth Dirt Track
This ¼-mile clay oval is located on the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds and holds weekly races on Saturday nights from late April to mid-September. Witness action-paced races the whole family will love including 360 Sprint Cars, Late Models, BMods and Grand Nationals. Occasional special events include IRA Sprints, All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars, Dirt Kings Late Model Tour, World of Outlaws Late Model Series and AMA flat track motorcycles.
Explore the Old Plank Road Trail
Running along Plymouth on Highway 23 from Greenbush to Sheboygan, the Old Plank Road Trail offers ample recreational opportunities for nature lovers. The paved trail is roughly 17 miles long and is shared by cyclists, walkers, joggers, mopeders, equestrians as well as snowmobilers in the winter. From Plymouth, head west on the trail towards Greenbush for a more adventurous trek as you approach the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The Plymouth trailhead, located on the city’s east side, has parking, pavilions, grills and restrooms.
Play at the Park
Plymouth is home to 17 parks that span more than 90 acres and offer a wide variety of recreation including multi-age playgrounds, disc golf at H.M. Meyer Nature Park, tennis and nature walks. Plymouth also boasts the only recreational ski hill in Sheboygan County – Nutt Ski Hill – as well as the Mill Pond Ice Skating Shack and cross country ski trails. With 18 acres to its name, City Park is Plymouth’s largest developed park and home to the Plymouth Aquatic Center and 7th Element Skate Park.
