Dining Al Fresco

Posted on July 31, 2024 by Grace Olson

Fresh Air and Good Eats Await

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Wisconsin in summer is unbeatable. So, it stands to reason that we’d want to spend as much time outside as possible to soak up the sunshine, light breezes and friendly faces.

We get all of that and more in al fresco dining.

Translated to “in the fresh air,” eating outside originated during the medieval times, having happened as a celebratory feast after a hunt. Then, it became something of a special occasion in private gardens and finally a popular pastime for all.

Today, you don’t have to wait for special occasions to indulge in and enjoy dining outside with family and friends.

From waterfront destinations to new-on-the-scene patios, the Fox Cities have a handful of pretty perfect options for al fresco dining.

Batley’s Grill & Bar, Neenah

Outdoor space opens annually May 1.

New on the scene in the Fox Cities, “Batley’s Grill & Bar is a locally owned and operated restaurant that caters to everyone with our diverse offerings and versatile dining spaces,” Ryan Batley, General Manager, Best Western Premier Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center, says. “Our outdoor space is inviting, fun, spacious, and a true destination. Our Pattie Shack pavilion is perfect for large group gatherings, with our patio featuring two pergolas, four fire pits, and numerous dining tables.  The surrounding area includes two Pickleball courts, a basketball hoop, a giant checkerboard, Connect4, climbing sphere, Cornhole, tetherball, and a large Rainbow Playground set. It’s also within walking distance of the 18-hole mini golf course, On The Fringe, and accessible by bike from the Bridgewood Trail and Neenah Creek.  Guest can enjoy live music on the patio Thursdays from 5-8 pm in June, July, and August, as well as select Saturdays.”

Pet-friendly? “Our outdoor patio is dog-friendly, welcoming each pup with a treat, a bowl of water, and a special dog menu with items just for furry friends,” Batley says. “We also have multiple dog waste stations conveniently located around the property for easy clean up.”

Batley’s Grill & Bar’s full menu, along with Party Platter options available for large groups, is available in the outdoor space.

“We are dedicated to reinvesting in this space annually and constantly seek new ideas and suggestions to enhance it.  Our patio offers a variety of memorable experiences, from fireside dining and a Neenah, Wisconsin-themed wall mural to family-friendly activities and games. It’s a place where friends, family, colleagues, and sports teams can gather to celebrate and create lasting memories with entertainment and delicious food for all ages.

“If you’re seeking the perfect space to entertain and relax, our patio is the place to be! Join our Loyalty Program today and start enjoying the rewards.”

Christianos Pizza, Appleton

Outdoor space is open from late spring to late fall.

Christianos Pizza is described as a family-owned pizzeria focusing on providing high quality food, made the real Italian way.

“Our pizzas are cooked at 800 degrees and made with simple ingredients: non-GMO flour imported from Italy, vine-ripened tomatoes from California and real mozzarella cheese from Wisconsin dairy farms,” Sean Wise, owner, says.

“A cozy outdoor patio surrounded by lush landscaping and string lights, with plenty of seating to accommodate many guests.”

Pet-friendly? Yes, we love seeing your pets,” Wise says.

Christianos Pizza’s full menu is available in the outdoor space.

“The string lights and surrounding landscaping make the patio a charming place to enjoy a wood fired pizza with a craft cocktail, beer or wine,” Wise says. “The garage door that opens to the indoor bar gives our guests the opportunity to order food and drinks from the patio if desired.

“We have live music scheduled on Friday nights during the patio season!”

Fratellos Waterfront Restaurant, Appleton

Outdoor space is open year round, weather dependent, from general outside seating to domes in the winter.

Located in a historical water plant with spacious dining rooms, Fratellos offers a “full-length bar, modern décor and stunning views of the Dam perched along the Fox River,” Jay Supple, owner, says. “Chef curated features include fresh seafood, steaks, fresh pasta, pizzas, salads and sandwiches.”

Their outdoor space provides amazing views with sounds of the Dam, with wildlife making it an exquisite experience.

Pet-friendly? Yes.

Fratellos’ full menu is available in the outdoor space.

“To be located in the middle of the city you can experience views and sounds of the water, that takes you to a special place, to enjoy and relax,” Supple says.

“The scenery changes by the minute, from seeing a bald eagle, to white pelicans, to otters swimming.”

Rusted Roost Restaurant & Bar, Menasha

Outdoor space hours to be determined.

Kari Mulder, Owner, describes the freshly renovated Rusted Roost Restaurant & Bar as a “A Big City Vibe in a Small Town,” but explains their rooftop space is “welcoming, relaxed and a fun vibe.”

Pet-friendly? Not at this time.

The outdoor menu is limited to appetizers and cocktails.

“This space is so special due to its vibe,” Mulder says. “It’s a great place for others to meet and gather and unwind, listen to some great music or a possible band. More importantly it’s the first of its kind in the Fox Valley area.

“The outdoor space is open to hourly rentals. Call for more information.”
