Downtown Creates…

Appleton Downtown Inc. unveiled this year’s Downtown Creates… series on May 21, which will give the community fun reasons to stroll College Avenue all summer long. The program includes a series of open-air, walkable arts events taking place the third weekends of June, July and August.

2018 Chalk on the Town winner

Downtown Creates…, previously named Art on the Town, showcases themed art projects by the community, for the community, says Appleton Downtown Inc. Marketing Director Lynn Hardy.

“We are a very talented community whether it’s local artists or just people who love to create, so this is just a way for them to get together and create their own pieces and have it displayed for the community,” Hardy says.

Each month invites the community to participate a themed art project. June’s project is Artful Chairs, where community members take an old chair and give it new life. The community favorite Chalk Walk will return downtown in July, adorning the sidewalks of College Avenue with all sorts of chalk art. In August Paint Out returns, which debuted last year. Unlike other Downtown Creates… events which feature the finished project, Paint Out gives the opportunity to see the artistic process in a plein-air style painting competition.

“Everybody loves to see artists creating,” Hardy says, “kind of like a behind-the-scenes view.”

Registration forms for Downtown Creates… will be available on Downtown Appleton Inc.’s website ahead of each event.
