Dr. Charles Smith: Aurora

Experience more than 150 works from Dr. Smith’s African-American Heritage Museum and Black Veterans Archive in Aurora, Illinois, most of which have not been on view since the site was disassembled in 1999. A preacher, activist, and Vietnam veteran, Dr. Smith made hundreds of sculptures of historical figures, community members, and celebrities to depict the tragedies and triumphs of the African-American experience. Studio 51: Foam Printmaking

In this inventive class, we will explore the process of printmaking using pens, ink and foam. Students will choose their favorite subject and create multiple prints that they will be able to take home to share with family and friends. All materials are provided. Class size is limited. This class is for all ages. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult or a sibling over the age of 12.

Discover relief printmaking by planning, carving, and printing woodblocks. Throughout this engaging class, students will experiment with basic techniques in carving and inking, while learning the subtleties of hand printing multiple images. The class is open to students of all artistic levels. All basic materials provided. Feel free to bring your own materials if you so choose. Adults only. Ages 12 to adult welcome. Instructor lead.

New Orleans’ most celebrated modern brass band, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, pairs up with The Squirrel Nut Zippers and their multi-platinum blend of 1930’s era jazz, swing and Delta blues.
