The term “ekphrasis” comes from ancient Greeks, and can be loosely translated to a vivid description. Art and poetry have a long and rich history, from “Ode on a Grecian Urn” by John Keats to Frank O’ Hara responding to paintings. Ekphrastic poems use a variety of strategies and techniques to observe, investigate, and interpret art—usually either a painting, photograph, or sculpture.

In this two-hour workshop, we’ll read and discuss some examples of ekphrastic poems. Then you’ll write your own ekphrastic poem in class, using art in the galleries and from other provided sources. The assignment provides poets with new ways of seeing an object. You’ll also learn effective strategies for stating what’s been observed, furthering your exploration of how art can be the catalyst for insight, feelings, and connections. Finally, we’ll use the remaining workshop time to share and discuss the ekphrastic poems.

*No poetry or artistic background is necessary, but rather an openness and interest in learning and sharing.

Materials: please bring any journal or paper and pen or paper. We’ll also provide some as well.

Instructor: Lora Vahlsing earned her Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from The University of Oregon. She holds additional degrees in Literature and Art, and is an artist, photographer and writer.
