The Door County Maritime Museum’s popular Maritime Speaker Series kicks off its monthly programming on Thursday, Dec. 8 with “A Doll, a Wrench, and a Thimble – Remembering the loss of the ‘Palace Steamer’ Niagara.” As with all the programs in the series, the presentation will be held at the museum in Sturgeon Bay beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free, with the donation of a non-perishable food item appreciated.
Former museum Executive Director Bob Desh will detail that tragic event that took place in September of 1856, when the Niagara burned during a voyage from Sheboygan to Port Washington and a total of 150 souls were lost, making it one of Wisconsin’s worst maritime disasters.
