In honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic Voting Rights Act, Lawrence will honor two civil rights pioneers instrumental in the passing of the legislation. Congressman John Lewis, one of the leaders of the civil rights movement, and Appleton native James Zwerg, one of the Freedom Riders in 1961, will be awarded honorary doctorate degrees. Lewis, a national leader in the fight against social injustice for more than 50 years, will deliver the commencement address.
