Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Tretheway combines the personal and the historical in her work, combining her mixed-race background and writing skills to convey the plight of the southern black woman. Her writing frequently addresses societal issues regarding class, race and war. Her 2006 book of poems, Native Guard, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. In 2012, she was named the country’s 19th Poet Laureate.
