Appleton, Wisconsin – The Appleton Historical Society invites the Appleton community to attend their upcoming event, “A Medley of Appleton History” History Fair on Saturday, December 4. The event runs from 9:00am-12:30pm at the Indoor Farmer’s Market in the City Center, 10 E. College Avenue.
Exhibits will include an extensive display of currency printed by Appleton’s five charter banks during the period 1866-1910, before the establishment of the Federal Reserve Bank. In those 44 years, $8,400,000 was distributed.
Appleton dairies will be spotlighted. At its peak, 82 diaries were in business in Appleton and the immediate vicinity. In the days before refrigeration, the milk man would arrive on a horse and buggy several times a week placing cheese, glass milk bottles and cream in a metal box on the back porch or in the milk chute. Many dairies merged in the 1940-1950s when refrigeration became more commonplace and the requirement that milk to be homogenized.
A display of Aid Association for Lutherans, which was founded in a home in Appleton in 1902. Organized by members of the Lutheran Church for the purposes of giving aid to their members, wives and children in case of death and provide assistance to themselves in case of sickness, accident and old age. The fraternal organization had a rapid rise to success.
Other historical items to be exhibited include Lutz Ice Company, Schiedemayer Hardware, Alko Supermarket and the Appleton Haytool Company
The Appleton Historical Society was founded in 2010 to preserve and share the history of Appleton. In 2017 we opened the Appleton Historical Society Museum at 128 N. Durkee. Our museum features a map room, research space and rotating exhibits of Appleton’s history. The museum is open Thursday-Sunday. The Society runs monthly presentations on topics of Appleton’s history, a Cemetery Walk in August and twice-yearly History Fairs.
