Area students are getting crafty and joining forces to help those in need. Their creativity will result in nearly 400 bowls, created for the 2015 Empty Bowls Fundraiser. On December 2, Fond du Lac community members will have the opportunity to select a handcrafted bowl and enjoy soup and bread donated by local businesses as a reminder of those who are going hungry in our community.

The annual fundraiser luncheon, organized by the Leadership Fond du Lac Alumni Group, will take place on Wednesday, December 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Retlaw Plaza Hotel. Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce (207 N Main Street) prior to the event and can be purchased at the door on the day of the event. All proceeds raised will help to support local food pantries.

Students at Winnebago Lutheran Academy (WLA) have been busy crafting bowls! “The students are so excited to help out with the Empty Bowls project.” stated Barb Zahn, Art teacher at WLA. “The students hear in our daily chapel services how we are to help others and this is an excellent opportunity for them to put those words into action by helping the less fortunate in our community.” Other schools participating in making bowls include: Campbellsport Middle and High School, Fond du Lac High School, Horace Mann High School, North Fond du Lac Alternative Learning Center, Laconia High School, Oakfield Middle & High School, St. Mary’s Springs Academy-High School, Theisen Middle School, and Woodworth Middle School.

The annual Empty Bowls fundraiser has enabled area students to help make a difference since its introduction to the area in 1999. The three-fold purpose of this event is to promote an awareness of hunger in our community and world, create an awareness of art education and its impact on civil and social responsibility and provide an opportunity for the community to come together to raise money for local food pantries and shelters. Empty Bowls provides an opportunity for students to give back to their communities and, at the same time, remind everyone in the community that we can all play a part in making the world a better place. “We are very excited to be bringing the Leadership FDL Alumni and the community together to raise funds and awareness for those who really need our help.” stated John Williams, chair of Empty Bowls. “ Last year we raised over $ 10,000 with this luncheon and I hope we can do it again.”
