How do you describe your art? I mainly create functional pottery. I focus on simplicity and ease of use, incorporating nature-inspired motifs that evoke beauty and peace, as well as whimsical designs that bring joy to the moment.
Were you always interested in following a creative path? I’ve always loved creating with my hands. Since I was young, I enjoyed drawing, beading, paper crafting, sewing and other creative hobbies. Then I discovered the world of clay—and I’ve never looked back since!
What does your “day-in-the-life” look like? I go to the Y in the morning for Zumba (another passion of mine!), have lunch with my husband and then either head to the clay studio at NWTC Artisan Center (my favorite place!) or go down to the basement to make pottery. And from here on, I will be frequently at BAVA Gallery, a newly opened co-op art gallery in downtown Green Bay by a group of artists including myself! (bavagallerygb.com)
Where do you get your creative inspiration? Just about anywhere, but often while taking walks and observing trees, flowers and birds. Ideas also emerge while I’m lying down and “opening the drawers” in my mind.
Why do you love what you do? Creating something with earth, water and fire feels fundamental and simple, yet it holds endless possibilities.
The trial and error, the unexpected delights and disappointments when opening the kiln, learning patience, and enjoying the journey all feel very much aligned with life itself. Making pottery helps me feel grounded and centered.
One thing most people don’t know about being an artist, in your opinion: People sometimes imagine artists as eccentric or overly particular, but in my experience, artists are some of the most down-to-earth and generous people. They genuinely love sharing their tools, ideas, techniques and passions with others. I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such a creative community.
Early bird or night owl? I’m not sure I’d call myself an early bird, but I’m definitely not a night owl these days. I’m ready to go to bed at 9:30!
Last movie you watched or book you read: Some of my all-time favorite movies are Million Dollar Baby, Green Book, The Intern, The Upside. I like movies about unexpected friendships.
Is the glass half full or half empty? I tend to see the glass as half empty so l can prepare for the worst, but it’s actually a good strategy because it often leads to positive outcomes at the end.
What makes you happiest? Family and friends, good health, delicious food, a successful batch of pottery, Zumba, walking and talking, movies and popcorn, art fairs, and the simple joy of creating something with my hands.
