Colt Brown

Art medium(s): I would say my strongest mediums are photography, painting and tattooing.  I don’t like to limit myself to any medium.

How do you describe your art? Flow is very important to me so my art tends to have a dreamy feel to it. I did ask my Ma this question and she said it’s hard to describe because it’s constant growth. I’m always learning and taking information from one medium and applying it in another.  Although it is hard to describe in words, I think visually there is a unique signature style across all mediums, which I think is my greatest artistic accomplishment.

Were you always interested in following a creative path? I think that was inevitable for me. I’m naturally an imaginative person, so being creative is instinct in all situations and decisions.  It’s the only path I’ve ever considered.

What does your “day-in-the-life” look like? I start my day driving my son to school while he literally talks the whole time about Minecraft and math (but not limited to those). For real though, that kid can talk a lot. Then I’ll head to work to distract my besties for an hour or so… I try to reserve my morning hours for the business side of things. During the day I’m usually tattooing or working in my studio.

Where do you get your creative inspiration? If I can find the artistic side of something and I like it, it inspires me—pretty much no matter what it is. Surprisingly, I’ve found my best ideas tend to come when I’m mowing my lawn or taking a shower.

Why do you love what you do? If you were to meet me in person, you would find out in ten seconds how passionate I am about art. It’s just a natural love, the same way you would love your kids or your favorite meal. I think the main thing is I get to do what I love and I didn’t let anything stop me from pursuing an artistic journey.

One thing most people don’t know about being an artist, in your opinion: You have to let an artist be an artist. You can’t tell them what to do, how to do it or when.

Early bird or night owl? My wife calls me a vampire because I don’t sleep very much.

Last movie you watched or book you read: I believe Sarah’s Oil was the last movie I watched—I would highly recommend it.

Is the glass half full or half empty? The glass is always half full. If you see it as half empty, just raise the glass a little bit to change your perspective.

What makes you happiest? I believe the core to happiness is being present and appreciating the moment. My love language is quality time so when I’m around my friends and family, that is when I am the most happy. I’m also pretty freakin’ happy when I’m taking street photos in Italy.
