Elkhart Lake

A village with a population of under 1,000 and at 0.01 square miles, Elkhart Lake’s unassuming stats don’t match its impact in the area and beyond.

Situated about 45 miles from the Fox Cities, in northwestern Sheboygan County, you have likely heard of the location despite its tiny size—something that can be attributed to its racing reputation that makes it a known entity around the world.

“Elkhart Lake has a longstanding history as a vacation destination, the entertainment that comes along with that and of course the racing history with Road America,” Kathleen Eickhoff, Executive Director of Wisconsin’s Elkhart Lake, says.

“Even on leisure weekends when it’s not a race weekend, that whole race vibe kind of permeates our village and really elevates the type of experience we can offer all of our guests. It’s a cool thing to try to connect to and understand.”

It only adds to the festive vibe that’s naturally there due to its people.

“Elkhart Lake has a very fun atmosphere,” Lynn Shovan, Village President and owner of Lake Street Cafe, says. “Businesses are all here to provide guests with festive fun: shopping, dining, classes, activities on the beach.

“It is very eclectic in its collection of businesses and architecture—from brand new to very old. It all just kind of melds together for a very unique experience.”

The camaraderie and collaboration adds another level of charm, creating an amicable and peaceful atmosphere that all guests notice and appreciate.

The spirit may be most striking within their elevated and upscale (without pretention), not to mention well-executed—dining scene, where there is room for all.

“All of our restaurants have all got unique things that no one else does,” Eickhoff says. “Everyone has found their niche and their ‘thing.’

“We all get along and support each other,” Shovan reflects. “We all help each other. We share ideas, we share products. We all dine at each other’s restaurants or shop at each other’s stores because we want everyone to succeed. It’s amazing.”

“We’re known for that welcoming spirit,” Eickhoff adds. “It’s really a genuine camaraderie and you see that, both on the business end and the resident end. People really embrace guests. Not all destinations are like that.”

It’s all about the experience in Elkhart Lake that drives its popularity—from its walkability, its small town charm, good food, people and history. But it may just be its biggest “resident” that draws the most attention and activity.

Elkhart Lake is 292 acres with a maximum depth of 119, allowing guests to fish, boat and enjoy swimming, paddleboarding and more on the water.

“Our lake is absolutely our prized possession. It is the jewel of our destination,” Eickhoff says. “It’s the thing that sets us apart.”
While summer may be considered “high season,” Elkhart Lake is a year-round spot to enjoy all any time of year.

“We have a lot of events, a lot of family-friendly events, music, things to bring people together,” Eickhoff explains. “What we love to do in Elkhart Lake is let people come and enjoy our beautiful spaces with their friends and family.”

“We love to throw a good party!” Shovan adds.

From capturing scenic views, resort living, boutique shopping and elevated, unique food, Elkhart Lake invites you to join them for the celebration.

DINING TO-DO LIST
Elkhart Lake’s dining scene is more than meets the eye. It offers elevated food for everyone, and uses genuine connection and collaboration to make it even better. Try these eateries to fuel your day or weekend trip!

Breakfast + Brunch

Described as a “quaint sandwich and coffee shop nestled in the center of Elkhart Lake,” Off The Rail offers made from scratch breakfast and lunch items that come with a side of history.

“The space was the original railroad depot in town but moved to the feedmill space it currently occupies when a larger depot was built,” Owner/operators, Daniel and Kelley Sadiq, say. “The feedmill space also houses a quaint store and clothing place.”

Known for their Freshly Baked Muffins, Sandwiches and Egg Strata, a particular favorite is The Commuter: bacon, scrambled egg and Vern’s cheddar on sourdough bread.

“We (also) serve craft coffees—from Cedarburg Coffee Roastery—and teas, espresso drinks, delicious peanut butter bars and (other) made from scratch baked goods.”
“The food that you get at Off The Rail would be considered ‘gourmet breakfast,’” Kathleen Eickhoff adds. “Everything has great ingredients, unique names. It feels like everything is made with love.”

When the weather is favorable, be sure to grab a seat outside.

For the classic breakfast you crave to start your day trip or longer stay, hit up All Seasons Family Restaurant. Their intimate and charming, not to mention family-friendly, ambiance is the perfect welcome to Elkhart Lake.

“(We have) a strong sense of community reminiscent of a small town,” Manager Amber Feldmann says. “We take great pride in the fact that our entire staff has been employed here for numerous years… we are truly a tight-knit family and many of us have developed lasting friendships.”

Fluffy Omelets, Pancakes and Cheesy Skillets are amongst fan favorites.

“It’s your classic diner breakfast and it’s just really good,” Lynn Shovan explains. “You can get breakfast there all day. If I want a classic breakfast, I go there.”

If you’re looking for a morning meal with a view, the public is welcome to enjoy Otto’s Restaurant, within The Osthoff Resort, for breakfast staples like Eggs Served Your Way, Yogurt Parfaits, Fresh Fruit and more.

“(Otto’s) provides a casual, welcoming setting for breakfast and lunch with beautiful views of our scenic courtyard—perfect for relaxed dining indoors or al fresco,” Social Media Manager, Amanda Cook, says.

Lunch

Known for their in-house smoked BBQ, The Garage BBQ Pit and Saloon is an easy stop as you stroll into Elkhart Lake. It’s an added bonus if you’re a race enthusiast or want to be introduced to that world.

“All our decor is vintage racing memorabilia and super cool racing neon signs,” Co-owner/operator with fiance Weston, Sarah Jimenez, says. “You can view any car cruise parade from our patio which I say is the best seat in town!”
It’s safe to come hungry as Pit Master Weston is smoking meat daily: Brisket, Pork Belly, Pork and Chicken Wings.

We also have a kids’ menu and deep fried cheesecakes!” Jimenez adds. “Everything on the menu is delicious. Our flavor game is out of this world!”

Live music and karaoke are also a hit at The Garage. When the weather permits, bring your four-legged friend for their dog-friendly patio.

Fun Fact: Our building was a garage originally before any restaurant,” Jimenez says. “We didn’t know this when we decided to name it The Garage. Everything happens for a reason!”

Having been a part of the community for 25 years, Lake Street Cafe is a staple for lunch and dinner.

“When we opened, we went back to basics. We do everything fresh. We bake all of our own bread and desserts. We make our own stocks, soups,” Owner Lynn Shovan says.

With menu items like Seared Yellow Fin Tuna: soy-chili sauce, lime, cucumber, red onion, wasabi mayo, toasted sesame seed and sesame oil; Seared Scallops, Roasted Beet Fennel and Warm Nut Crusted Goat Cheese Salads all on their lunch menu, it’s no doubt the food is gourmet; however, the menu also caters to their guests.

“Being a family resort town, nothing makes me happier than seeing parents having steak, fresh fish and a nice bottle of wine (Lake Street Cafe has a Wine Spectator Best Of Award of Excellence winning wine list!) and the kids having hot dogs and pizza. Everybody is happy.”

If you’re in the mood for traditional, but elevated, bar food, plus a gorgeous view, Quit Qui Oc Golf Club & Restaurant is the place to be.

“We manage our restaurant like a local pub,” Owner Todd Montaba says. “We have a wonderful selection of entrees on our Grille Menu that we serve every day. (Everything is) made from great, fresh ingredients and range from Soups, Salads, Wraps and Sandwiches.

“I love their Twisted Turkey Club,” Kathleen Eickhoff adds. “And you can overlook the golf course, which is fantastic.”

You’re likely ready for a sweet spot—literally, and Gessert’s Ice Cream & Confectionery is the quintessential feel-good, small town ice cream shop offering over 24 flavors of ice cream, a soda fountain, homemade fudge and candy. Having begun in 1922, the historic space remains true to its nature.

“True authenticity lives at Gessert’s, as it is one of the oldest ice cream parlors in the United States with

over 100 years of history. Gessert’s remains family owned, just as it was when it first began.”

Happy Hour

While there is no shortage of fun beverages in Elkhart Lake, there’s also a built-in philosophy to take it easy. You’re in a resort town after all!

“We kind of have downtime from about 4-6,” Lynn Shovan says. Happy Hour is during a time when everyone is at the lake or at the track. But everyone is making their own specialty cocktails.”

Dinner + Late Night

Head back to Lake Street Cafe for their dinner favorites: Tenderloin Shiraz: certified angus beef tenderloin, garlic herb boursin cheese, Shiraz wine sauce and fingerling potatoes; Sea Bass: pan-seared ginger soy marinated sea bass, sauteed spinach and shiitake mushrooms, a julienne of carrots, cucumber, and red onion and teriyaki sauce; and Orecchiette Con Carne: pasta, Italian sausage and beef ragu, tomato glaze, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, Sartori Sarvecchio Parmesan and a touch of cream.

“The steak has been on the menu since day one,” owner Lynn Shovan says. “Race teams love it and come for it.”

For a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, the Paddock Club is a great choice. Specializing in small plates and local ingredients, you can go back again and again and experience a different menu and flavor combinations.

“My sister, Lynn Chisholm, the Executive Chef, loves to collaborate with her team to bring in fresh seasonal ingredients,” General Manager and Owner, Cheri Hau says. “They also love to forage ramps, morel mushrooms, nuts, berries, wild asparagus, etc. They process and can tomatoes in the fall.”

Local favorites include Grilled Broccoli: roasted garlic lemon oil, red pepper rouille; Mushroom Risotto Fritters with a white truffle dip; Pasta Bolognese, slow simmered meat sauce, veal, pork, beef, white wine, tomato, pancetta, topped with Parmigiano Reggiano; and our Grilled Hanger Steak with skinny fries, roasted red onion and red wine veal sauce.

And try the Gnocchi!” Kathleen Eickhoff urges. “They’re little pillows of love.”

Fun Fact: “We researched for a long time for the name of our restaurant, and The Paddock Club was a secret gambling room in town that the Feds raided in the 60’s,” Hau says. “We thought it was a gamble to open a restaurant so the name was perfect. We also adopted a highway in 2025 and my staff is very proud of that!”

On Friday nights, don’t skip out on visiting Quit Qui Oc Golf Club & Restaurant for their beloved classics.

“We have a special dinner menu and serve a variety of Wisconsin classics, but our Fish Fry is known as one of the best in the area,” Owner Todd Montaba says. “We offer Perch, Bluegill, Walleye, Cod and Salmon along with an old fashioned salad bar. Our quaint Clubhouse is a warm setting offering some nice views of the golf course.”

To experience the only Roman style pizza available in Wisconsin—not to mention housemade liqueurs and bourbon and wine lists from around the world—available in Wisconsin, Harry’s Pizza E Vino is a must stop.

“We definitely take the stage for having a one-of-a-kind pizza that you’re not going to find elsewhere,” Co-owner with husband Avni, Laurie Latifi, says. “From our crust, which is super light and airy, to our well thought out toppings.

“The Lemon Pizza has been a delight to those who try. We start with the Roman style crust, smoked mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced lemon wheels, and fresh basil. Topped with arugula, parmesan cheese and extra virgin olive oil. It is delicious, and a must try!”

Refreshing and delicious, “an after dinner delight,” try housemade liqueurs: Limoncello, Orangecello, Crancello or Bandito, their coffee liqueur.

“During the winter months, we make a mulled wine called Vin Chaud that we serve in-house warm,” Laurie says.

“Come, sit at our all-wood, saloon style bar, order a glass of wine, enjoy some classic Italian tunes playing in the background and feel like you’re in Rome! Instead of ‘When in Rome,’ we like to say “When in Elkhart!”

If you liked your breakfast at Off The Rail and are still looking for a dinner option, you’re in for good news. The Full Monty, also owned by Daniel and Kelley Sadiq, is a “supper pub”/speakeasy style bar offering a mix of British and European dishes.

Known for their Indian and Thai Curries as well as Steak au Poivre.

“We also have a Pork Schnitzel and then some British staples, such as Steak and Ale Pie, Bangers and Mash, and on Fridays we do Fish & Chips: beer battered cod and fries,” Sadiq explains. “Our Espresso Martini uses the freshest off the rail espresso for an outstanding cocktail as well as a Brown Butter Bourbon Old Fashioned.

“(We’re) the closest you’ll get to an authentic pub feel in Sheboygan County, with friendly staff and quality cocktails—we also carry Guinness, Carlsberg Lager and Magners Irish Cider on tap.”

Fun fact: “The building has been a restaurant/bar since the 1930s and is an iconic building in Elkhart Lake. The underground bar was once called ‘The Hurrydowns’ as a shout out to the horse racing track that was in town until the early ‘50s.”

Described as a “diamond in the rough,” The Brown Baer beckons visitors in by their beer tap handle upper balcony railing, subtle neons, and a red porch.

“(They are) telltale marks signaling to outsiders to come on in and have some fun, the occupants are ready for action!” Owner Jesse Schneider says. “You walk in and it’s a vibe: wooden walls, super sized booths overlooking a pole for dancing, mismatched colorful chairs. It’s the basement in need of a facelift meets attic party palace, the type of establishment that gives you the feels as soon as you walk through the door. Homey. Friendly. Fun.”

While the environment might get your attention, the restaurant’s “uplifting” comfort food keeps it.
Their best seller is the Crunchwrap: seasoned ground beef, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream, tostada, and the most delectable gooey beer cheese all wrapped up in a tortilla.

“You can even substitute the beef with buffalo cauliflower; it’s a game changer,” Schneider says. “The oldies but goodies are the baked and grilled to perfection Wings and buttery Cornbread. Both have been on the menu for as long as I can remember. But the newest, most coveted menu item is the Pastrami Reuben. It changed my life. It’s jam packed with pastrami, oozing with cheese and 1000 island dressing with a mild kraut. So good!”

“All three of our resorts have very nice restaurants that are open to the public with great dining experiences  as well,” Kathleen Eickhoff says.

Celebrating its 70th year in 2025, Road America helped put Elkhart Lake on the map, and is continuing to do so this summer and beyond.

From our earliest days, we’ve had the backing of Elkhart Lake and the surrounding region,” John Ewert, Communications Director, says. “Generations of families have made Road America a part of their summers, and we’ve stayed relevant by blending historic character with modern amenities and a diverse event calendar.

If when you see a large body of water, you see a fishing opportunity, Inland Waters Fishing Guide can help. Specifically, Captain Mark Miller, who has been guiding on Elkhart Lake for 22 years.

“I have been very lucky to meet a lot of great people over the years from all over the world,” he reflects. “My favorite stories are usually all the same. Watching the kids catch their first fish or when they hook into a big muskie. I have seen a lot of both and never gets old!”
Miller offers fishing trips from 1 person up to 10 people depending on what guests are looking for.

While Elkhart Lake itself is a nature lover’s dream, there’s plenty more where that came from, with the Ice Age Trail and the Kettle Moraine State Forest each crossing through the village.

Fun Fact: “Our course is one of the oldest in Wisconsin. We opened in 1923, so this is our 102nd year,” Montana explains. “It was designed by Tom Bendelow. He was famous for building several courses in southeastern Wisconsin, such as: Tuscumbia, Chenequa, Nakoma, Tripoli and Old Hickory. Our historic designer used the unique topography to build a unique layout that has stood the test of time.”

Fun Facts/History:
The story of The Osthoff Resort is deeply woven into the rich and colorful history of Elkhart Lake. Originally opened in 1886 by German entrepreneur Otto Osthoff and his wife Paulina, the Osthoff Hotel quickly became a popular retreat for travelers seeking the natural beauty and tranquility of the spring-fed lake. By the early 1900s, Elkhart Lake had established itself as a thriving resort destination, with the arrival of interurban rail service in 1909 further boosting its popularity. Over the decades, the area evolved with the times—from hosting speakeasies during Prohibition to serving as the home of Camp Harand, a beloved performing arts camp that operated on the property for over 30 years. In 1989, a visionary group of investors reimagined the space, and in 1995, The Osthoff Resort as we know it today was born.

Siebkens Resort. “Everyone is welcome at Siebkens Resort,” Owner & General Manager Wendy S. Orth, says. “(It) is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places as a resort complex and is the only continuously running resort remaining from the era of train travel to Elkhart Lake. Siebkens Resort is located on The Hard Left Turn of the Historic Race Circuit.  Ollie Siebken Moeller (resort owner from the mid-1940’s to mid-1970’s) advocated for road racing to come to Elkhart Lake in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s alongside Jim Kimberly (avid racer and member of the Kimberly-Clark family).  After three successful years of road racing through the streets of Elkhart Lake, Ollie sold stock shares to raise funding for the creation of Road America.  Today Siebkens Resort is still a small, family-run business.  We play host to racing teams, motor enthusiasts, vacationers, and meeting attendees alike.  Everyone is welcome at Siebkens Resort.
