Anthropologist Lavanya Proctor and Cecile Despres-Berry, director of Lawrence’s English as Second Language program, lead a workshop on how varieties of English are neither more or less correct than others, but simply different. They will discuss language attitudes and ideologies inherent in the idea of standard Englishes and how to recognize and avoid linguistic discrimination. Free and open to the public, but advance registration at [email protected] would be appreciated.
