Worth the Drive: New London

New London is a city for all seasons, with recreational opportunities ranging from snowmobiling and ice fishing in the winter to canoeing, golfing and biking in the summer. With an abundance of outdoor activities, New London offers something for everybody.

A big draw to the community is the sturgeon spawning that happens every year in the Wolf River from mid-April to early May. The Sturgeon Trail is a favorite spot for visitors to view the prehistoric fish. Residents of New London also enjoy the many community events, shopping and dining options. With so many things to choose from in New London, you’ll never be bored.

Breakfast: If you’re looking for a cozy place to relax while you’re visiting, go to Familiar Grounds Coffee Shop for great drinks and food. They serve up hot breakfast sandwiches, fresh hot coffee, fruit smoothies and a wide array of other hot and cold drinks. Another option is Bucky’s which is known for their good service and is a favorite of locals. When they serve up classics such as biscuits and gravy, hash browns and steak and eggs, it’s easy to understand why.

Lunch: The hot summer months are the peak season for visiting Shamrock Heights Golf & Supper Club. Enjoy your meal while looking over the rolling golf greens. You can choose from homemade pizzas, Friday fish and a diverse lineup of other menu items. This restaurant is sure to be a hole in one. As a note though, during off season hours they are only open from 4-8 p.m. on Thursdays and 4-8:30 p.m. on Fridays. If you’re in the mood for Mexican cuisine, head to El Tequila Mexican Restaurant on W. North Water Street. It’s a favorite of residents because of their colorful atmosphere, friendly staff and reasonably priced food and drinks. Five-dollar margaritas anyone? Sit inside or enjoy a view of the Wolf River on their outside deck.

Dinner: Another great option for a delicious meal is Pine Tree Supper Club. They offer a family friendly atmosphere and a quality dining experience for visitors. Well known for their old fashioneds and prime rib, this is the place when you’re seeking a classic supper club vibe. Otherwise, if you have an appetite for pizza, go to Jolly Roger’s Pizzeria for the best homemade pizza in New London. They have been in business now for 26 years and are known for their delicious pizza. Each pizza is homemade, fresh and customized to what you want. While their pizza is a big hit, they also offer favorites such as mac and cheese, bacon cheeseburgers, onion rings and cheese curds. If you’re looking for a fun night out, go to Hilby’s, where they have bowling lanes and a variety of food that will satisfy all. Their menu includes broasted chicken, ribs and pizza. Whatever your craving is, make sure to stop by the bowling lanes after. The options are endless at Hilby’s and all ensure for an enjoyable night.
Drinks: Get your dancing shoes ready – New London’s leading bar, The Barn, has live country music that is sure to put anyone in a better mood. They also have darts and a wide variety of drinks and appetizers. This is the place to be if you’re ready for some nightlife in New London. If you’re looking to experience some of New London’s famed Irish hospitality, go to Pup’s Irish Pub; one of New London’s favorite bars. The bartenders are friendly and this is a great place to be with friends. With their great drinks and Irish music, anybody who visits is sure to have a good time. If you’re feeling lucky, visit during the week of St. Patrick’s day for traditional Irish food.

Meal You’ll Remember: The Waters Supper Club
The Waters Supper Club is regarded as one of the best dining options in New London, with a beautiful view of the Wolf River. They offer indoor seating where each window offers a view of the river as well as an outdoor deck that overlooks the river and is accessible by boat. Throughout the year, The Waters hosts live music and other special events. They are well known for their prime rib and old fashioneds, and offer everything from pizza and burgers to a Friday night fish fry. Whatever you’re in the mood for, The Waters will not disappoint.

If You’re Doing Your Own Cooking
For all the farmers market lovers, the Wolf River Market is open every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. through September. The market is run by the Chamber of Commerce and is located in their parking lot. Make sure to stop by for homemade and homegrown foods to make fresh meals all summer long.
