Vicki Gust

Art medium(s): Oil. It comes in vibrant colors that can be blended or layered easily to get the effect I desire. It also dries slowly, allowing me to walk away and re-evaluate how I want to proceed.

How do you describe your art? I would describe my art as realistic. Iw ould also describe my art as being able to share what I find beautiful in my surroundings every day.

Were you always interested in following a creative path? I have always had a passion for art since I was a little girl. My artistic parents were always encouraging, taught me many things and supplied me with abundant art supplies.

What does your “day-in-the-life” look like? My “day-in-the-life” finds me enjoying freedom of retirement, going places, spending time with my husband, sister or friends along the way, I take note of what I want to paint next from my surroundings–flowers in my garden, birds on the river, deer in the woods, etc.

Where do you get your creative inspiration? Most of my creative inspiration comes from my artistic twin sister. We share ideas, what we will paint next and encourage one another. I am also inspired by other artists.

Why do you love what you do? I love to paint simply because it is a part of who I am. When I share my paintings, I feel I am sharing a part of me with others.

One thing most people don’t know about being an artist, in your opinion: One thing I feel people don’t know about being an artists is that we make mistakes too and try, try again. Constant practice and study of techniques is essentia.. Yet, I always feel I could have done something different. We are our worst critic!

Early bird or night owl? I am an early bird and greedy my day with coffee and relaxation before doing anything.

Last movie you watched or book you read: I enjoy books that take me to another place or time period. I am currently reading Gap Creek by Robert Morgan. It takes place in the Appalacians. Molokai by Alan Brennert is another favorite, along with the Bible.

Is the glass half full or half empty? My glass is always half full. I find a positive attitude toward good or bad events always makes any situation better. Negativity is a waste.

What makes you happiest: I am happiest painting, spending time with my husband kayaking, watching an old movie, or going for a short road trip. I also love to garden and do some quilting. Happiness also comes from spending time with family or friends, especially over a cup of coffee.
