Jessica Lomena
Art medium(s): Watercolor
How do you describe your art? My art tends to be based on the themes of balance found in nature. There is light and dark in everything.
Were you always interested in following a creative path? I’ve always had a passion for art, and started painting as a child when my mom took me to classes at the Oshkosh Public Museum. As I became an adult, I put art aside to focus on work and family. However, after going through some pretty hardcore life changes, I realized creating is an important part of who I am and dove back into it with zeal.
What does your “day-in-the-life” look like? Each day tends to be different. I also work as an event coordinator, so my painting schedule varies. I’ve learned to try and grab the moments I feel inspired and allow myself to get lost in creating (time willing).
Where do you get your creative inspiration? I find it mostly outdoors… on walks, camping, at local parks. I’m a huge fan of art nouveau and try to incorporate a similar organic style into my work.
Why do you love what you do? I love painting with watercolor because it almost feels like therapy. You can only control a medium based on water so much, at some point it just does what it wants to do—the rest is letting go and allowing the paint to do its magic. Somewhere in there is a metaphor about life.
One thing most people don’t know about being an artist, in your opinion: I don’t know about other artists, but no matter how much time/effort I put into a painting, I always think “I could have done better”.
Early bird or night owl? Night owl!
Last movie you watched or book you read: I enjoy a wide variety of shows/movies. I can tell you that I’m a huge Star Trek fan and my fave book of all time is American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
Is the glass half full or half empty? Half full, but I try to give myself some grace if I’m having an off day.
What makes you happiest: This is where my inner hippy comes out, ha—I’m happiest near water, feeling the sun on my face, not wearing shoes, hanging with friends and fam that are dear to me.
