This month’s presentation: From the Football Field to the Clinic: The CTE Story and Hometown Memories of Appleton Native Dr. Ann McKee
Join us for a fascinating look at the video interview of Appleton native Dr. Ann McKee, an internationally renowned neurologist and neuropathologist. Her research, including the creation of the world’s largest brain bank focused on the long-term effects of brain trauma, is the primary reason that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is now considered a major public health concern worldwide. In addition to discussing her work about CTE, Dr. McKee will discuss her years in Appleton, how growing up in Appleton influenced her professional career choices, and her memories of Appleton. While the video was previously recorded, Dr. McKee will join in the evening’s festivities and be available for questions.
Presented by Dr. Ann McKee
A proud Appleton native, Dr. Ann McKee earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. She began her career as an internist but soon became fascinated by the brain and its disorders. That curiosity led her to complete additional residencies in Neurology and Neuropathology, studying under highly respected leaders in the field. Along the way, she discovered how studying the brain can reveal so much about human behavior and the conditions that shape who we are. Dr. McKee is the William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Pathology and Director of Boston University’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Alzheimer’s Disease Center and CTE Center. Dr. McKee is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and has received multiple awards for her work, including being named Bostonian of the Year by The Boston Globe in 2017 and being included in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2018.
