Meet Grace, our jig-dancing, dog-loving editorial intern with a green thumb and a healthy appreciation of waffles.
Tell us about your background:
I am a retired professional Irish dancer who is now an English major and Creative Writing minor at Lawrence. I love performing in any capacity, but dance will always be my favorite.
Why did you want to be an intern at FCM?
Writing has been a love of mine since kindergarten, and I’ve gotten more interested in magazine writing now that I’ve taken nonfiction writing classes at college. I feel very lucky to have an opportunity to intern at a magazine here in Appleton!
What’s your favorite thing about the Fox Cities?
The restaurants. The amount of food available in the area makes me feel like we’re in a larger area, which is great because I’m very much a city mouse. I’m also sort of impatient, so a wide array of food which I don’t have to cook is an asset.
The last book you read:
Citizen by Claudia Rankine. Important for everyone to read.
Last movie you watched:
Don’t Think Twice. It’s a movie about improv comedy and it’s equal parts funny and sad. Which is great, because my personality is equal parts funny and sad.
Any hidden talents?
Besides Irish dancing, which isn’t very hidden, I’m double jointed all over.
What can’t you live without?
What’s the biggest risk you ever took?
I was asked to fill a dancer’s spot on a dance tour to Japan three weeks before the tour left. It was completely out of my comfort zone, and my first professional tour, but I survived and learned a lot about myself along the way.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Tend your garden. Basically another way of saying “take good care of yourself.”
Describe your perfect Saturday:
24 hours of REM sleep. I recognize that that’s impossible, so an alternative would be eating waffles with close friends, laughing a lot, and taking some time to dance.
