Intern Intro: Susannah

Our newest intern, Susannah, spills her guts…

The Basics

Name: Susannah Gilbert

Age: 21

Hometown: Appleton, WI

University attending/year in school:
Lawrence University, senior

Favorite thing about the Fox Cities:
I was born and raised in Appleton and am now attending college here, but there are somehow still new discoveries to be made around every corner. Since when do we have a hemp store? Where did that Indonesian restaurant come from?

The Dirt

What is your favorite quote?
“Maybe our favorite quotations say more about us than about the stories and people we’re quoting.” – John Green

Favorite book?
An impossible question. But at the moment, I’d say either The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides or Certain Women by Madeleine L’Engle

Biggest guilty pleasure?
Watching too many episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in one sitting and spending all my spare dollars on dirty chai lattes.

Most played song on your iPod?
It’s ever-changing, but this week probably To Be Alone With You by Sufjan Stevens.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Invisibility definitely seems like it would be useful sometimes. Though perhaps creepy.

If you could be any fictional character, who would it be?
Wallace Wells, from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Virginia Woolf. We could hang out, get coffee, talk feminism and novels.

What do you hope to do after this internship?
Enjoy my last year at Lawrence, figure out one of those “job” things, live near a body of water.

What’s your dream job?
Writing novels and drinking coffee and getting paid to do it. Barring that, something where I still have time to write and read.

Write your memoir in six words:
Read too many books, got curious.

At what age did you consider yourself an adult?
Still waiting on that magic age.

Hidden talents?
I can make a cheesecake, calm an angry toddler, play the cello, and my roommate thinks I have prophetic powers.

One interesting fact:
I’ve been a vegetarian my entire life. Or if you’re not so interested in me, one of my current favorite facts is that “deipnophobia” is the fear of dinner parties or dinner party conversation.
