Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble Concert: “Generations in Jazz: A Tribute to John Harmon”

Wisconsin native and renowned jazz composer/pianist John Harmon performs with the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble and members of the Lawrence jazz faculty in a concert saluting his contributions to the Lawrence jazz program. Harmon founded the jazz program at Lawrence in 1971 and went on to lead the award-winning jazz nonet Matrix. Harmon’s evocative, distinctly American works have earned him the title “Wisconsin’s gentle poet of jazz.” Free & open to the public.

The Lawrence University Choirs present their final concert of the 2016-17 season. The Viking Chorale performs works with lyrics the Bible’s Book of Psalms. Cantala women’s choir sings about the joy and beauty of nature and friendships. The advanced ensemble, Concert Choir, performs works that explore centuries-old texts in a contemporary setting. Free and open to the public.

The lively concert program will include Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F,” a staple of band repertoire; Nathan Tanouye’s joyful and light-hearted “Kokopelli’s Dance,” a classical work written by a predominantly jazz composer; British composer Martin Ellerby’s “Paris Sketches,” with its fresh and distinctly original sound; and Nancy Galbraith’s “Danza de los Duendes,” a work described as being “energetic personality balanced by lyrical finesse.” Free and open to the public.

Lawrence University Percussion Ensemble Concert

A wide variety of percussion instruments will get a workout as the 34-member LU percussion ensemble performs works by Gordon Stout, Tom Nazziola and Julia Wolfe. The program also will feature Lawrence’s three non-Western ensembles, Sambistas, Kinkaviwo and Tambo Toke, playing and dancing traditional music from Brazil, Ghana and Cuba. The audience will be invited to come on stage for the Ghanaian dance Gota at the end of the program. Free and open to the public.
