Karen Mingst, a specialist in international organization and international law, discusses the United States’ long-standing ambivalence toward international institutions. She’ll examine three attributes of American culture — exceptionalism, views on sovereignty and exemptionalism — as well as the contrasting views of different presidents and the actions of Congress and the roles they play in that ambivalence. She also will discuss the Trump administration’s dissatisfaction with NATO and the United Nations and what it means for international order.
