The Lakefly Writer’s Conference returns to Oshkosh May 12-13, with a full slate of lively workshops designed to teach the craft and business of writing. The conference will be held at the Oshkosh Convention Center.

Writers of all genres, from beginners to published authors, will find something to spark their interest at the Lakefly Conference. There’s still time to register at www.lakeflywriters.org.

Keynote speaker for the conference is award-winner and UW-Madison graduate Nickolas Butler, author of the Wisconsin-based Shotgun Love Songs and the just-released novel, The Hearts of Men. His work has appeared in Narrative Magazine, Ploughshares, The Kenyon Review Online, The Progressive and The Christian Science Monitor.

Another highlight for crime and mystery writers is a workshop by Jerome Buting, former attorney for Steven Avery. Buting will talk about writing his book, Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America’s Broken System.

Writers interested in self-publishing will learn about avenues for promoting a book, how to avoid publishing scams and packaging their work for an online audience. A Q&A session will focus on agents and editors: How to determine if an author needs one, finding the right editor or agent and evaluating a contract. There are sessions on breaking into the Christian market, writing comedy or picture books and writing a memoir or family history.

Registration for the Lakefly Writers Conference is $60 (includes lunch on Saturday); or $70 at the door (lunch excluded). Vendor tables are also available on Saturday.
