The summer edition of Girlfriends Read Book Club at the Neenah Public Library will meet on Thursday, July 21, at 2:00 p.m., to discuss the book A Handful of Stars, by Cynthia Lord. Girlfriends Read features books with strong girl characters, written for ages nine and up but with broad appeal. Meetings include lively discussion, book-related activities and snacks. Participants are welcome to attend solo or with a friend or family member.
A Handful of Stars features twelve-year-old Lily who meets a young Hispanic girl whose migrant family is in Maine for the blueberry-picking season. The two forge a friendship based on their mutual love of dogs and more, but in the days leading up to the local blueberry festival, they are confronted with some of the hard truths of prejudice and migrant life. Cynthia Lord is a critically acclaimed, award-winning author who also wrote Rules, a Newbery Honor Book.
